Volunteer from home

Help keep Help in Grant County, our free guide to local services, up to date. All you need is a phone and an hour a week.

Why this matters

Many people who use this guide have no car and no minutes to spare on their phone. When a number has changed or the hours are wrong, they can lose a whole day walking across town to a closed door. Our guide lists more than 1,400 services, and every one needs a call now and then to make sure it's still right. That's where you come in.

What you'd do

  1. Sign in to our volunteer page from your own computer, tablet or phone. There's no password; we email you a link.
  2. Pick a place to call. The page shows which listings are due for a check. Search by town or type, or start with the quick ones.
  3. Call and ask a few simple questions: are they still offering the service, are the hours, phone and address the same, and who can get help. We give you a short, friendly script to start:
"Hi, my name is ___. I volunteer with Silver City Gospel Mission. We keep a free list of local services for people who need help. Could I take two minutes to make sure we have your information right?"
  4. Tap what you found: everything's right, something changed, no one answered, or they asked you to call back another day.
  5. That's it. Our staff double-check any new phone numbers or websites before they show on the site, so you never have to worry about getting it wrong.

Questions

Do I need to live in Grant County?

No. It helps to know the area, but the calls can be made from anywhere.

What if no one answers?

Mark it and move on. If they ask you to call another day, pick the day and the listing stays yours until then.

What if I'm not sure what they told me?

Write down what you heard in the notes box. Our staff will follow up on anything unclear.

Can I stop or take a break?

Of course. Help when you can. Just let us know if you'll be away for a while.

Are there other ways to help from home?

Yes: knitting hats and blankets, writing thank-you notes, grant research, social media and more. See all the ways to volunteer →
