These are the same steps our staff use when they help someone. "They" means the person who needs help: you, or someone you are helping. Go in order, and call ahead when you can.
1Find out what they need it for
You can ask"Did you serve in the military? Which branch, and about what years?"
You can ask"What do you need the DD-214 for: VA health care, housing, a job, an ID, or a funeral?"
You can say"Copies of your DD-214 are free. We can help you ask for one."
Need it for a funeral or burial right now? Tell the funeral home. They can ask for a rush copy.
2Start with the Veterans Service Officer (free)
The state Veterans Service Officer in Silver City can request the DD-214 and help with VA benefits at the same visit.
