Hears voices or feels watched or followed, but is calm

Use when a calm guest says they hear voices, feel watched, followed or targeted, or believe things others don't, and they are not a danger to themselves or others right now.

In danger right now: call 911. Crisis or thoughts of suicide: call or text 988. Not sure where to start? Call the Silver City Gospel Mission: 575-388-5071. Police, fire or sheriff, not an emergency: 575-388-8840 (Central Dispatch). Print our list of phone numbers →
These are the same steps our staff use when they help someone. "They" means the person who needs help: you, or someone you are helping. Go in order, and call ahead when you can.

1Check for danger first

You can ask"Are the voices telling you to hurt yourself or anyone else?"
If yes, or they have a weapon or seem ready to act, call 911 and get Mission staff.

If they become upset, loud or out of control, use the guide "Someone is very confused, seeing things, or out of control in public".

2Talk with respect

Sit at their level in a calm, quiet spot. Give them space and a clear way out.
You can say"That sounds really stressful. I'm glad you told me."
Don't argue about what they hear or believe. Don't agree with it or play along either.
Talk about the feeling: "It sounds scary to feel watched all the time."
You can ask"What would help you feel a little safer right now?"

3Meet basic needs

Not sleeping, hunger and drugs can make voices and fear worse.
At the Gospel MissionOffer a meal, a shower, clean clothes or a hygiene kit. Our peer support counselors can talk with them.
You can ask"Do you take any medicine for this? Have you run out?" If yes, see the guide "Ran out of or stopped their mental health medicine".

4Connect them with care

You can ask"Would you be willing to talk with someone who helps with this?"
