These are the same steps our staff use when they help someone. "They" means the person who needs help: you, or someone you are helping. Go in order, and call ahead when you can.
1Check for danger first
You can ask"Are you having thoughts of hurting yourself or ending your life?"
If they have a plan, a weapon or pills with them, or have already hurt themselves, call 911 now. Stay with them.

2Listen and take it seriously
You can say"Thank you for telling me. A lot of people feel this way. It can get better with help."
You can ask"How long have you felt like this? Is it getting worse?"
You can ask"Are you sleeping and eating? Are you drinking or using more than usual?"
3Basic needs first
Hunger, no sleep and cold make depression worse. Start with what they need today.
At the Gospel MissionOffer breakfast or lunch from the soup kitchen, a shower, and clean clothes from the clothing bank.
At the Gospel MissionOur peer support counselors and case worker can talk with them. Ask staff who is in today.
4Set up counseling or a doctor visit
You can ask"Would you be willing to see a counselor or a doctor about this?"
