These are the same steps our staff use when they help someone. "They" means the person who needs help: you, or someone you are helping. Go in order, and call ahead when you can.
1Keep yourself safe
Pull over well off the road and turn on your hazard lights.
Watch for traffic before you get out. Stay away from fire, leaking fuel and downed power lines.
2Call 911
Call 911. Say the road, nearest cross street or mile marker, direction, how many vehicles, and whether anyone is hurt or trapped.

3Help the hurt
Don't move someone who is hurt unless there is fire or another danger. Moving them can hurt the neck or back more.
If it's safe, ask the driver to turn off the engine.
Press hard on any heavy bleeding. See the guide "Someone is bleeding badly".
If someone isn't breathing, start CPR. See the guide "Someone collapsed, isn't breathing, or won't wake up".
Keep the hurt person still, warm and talking.
4Afterward
Stay until police come if you saw what happened. Tell them what you saw.
If they were hit as a pedestrian or hurt in a crime, use the guide "Was robbed, beaten or hurt by a crime".
