These are the same steps our staff use when they help someone. "They" means the person who needs help: you, or someone you are helping. Go in order, and call ahead when you can.
1Keep everyone safe first
If they have a weapon, or the danger is right now: get people away and call 911.

Emergency: police, fire, ambulance

If a fight starts, see the guide "Someone is being attacked, or a fight breaks out".
2Listen and calm things down
You can say"I can see you are really upset. I want to help so no one gets hurt."
You can ask"Who are you thinking of hurting? Do you have a plan? Do you have a weapon?"
You can ask"Are you also thinking of hurting yourself?"
If yes, see the guide "Someone is in crisis or talking about suicide".
