These are the same steps our staff use when they help someone. "They" means the person who needs help: you, or someone you are helping. Go in order, and call ahead when you can.
1Check for danger first
A weapon, a fight, threats, a fire, or someone badly hurt or not breathing: call 911 right away. Do not try to handle it yourself.
911 (Grant County Regional Dispatch)
Emergency: police, fire, ambulance
911
Silver City · 24/7
2Keep yourself and others safe
Keep a safe distance and a clear way out behind you.
Stay calm. Speak slowly and quietly. Keep your hands where they can be seen.
Don't touch, corner, argue with or shout at the person. Don't film close to their face.
3Talk to them, if it feels safe
You can say"Hi, is everything okay? Is there something I can help you find?"
You can say"I need to keep this doorway clear. You're welcome to come to the Mission for a meal and a place to sit."
You can ask"Are you hungry? Do you need a place to rest or a drink of water?"
