Caring for someone with dementia or memory loss

Use when someone is caring for a family member with dementia, Alzheimer's or memory loss and needs a diagnosis, safety tips, breaks, legal planning or support.

In danger right now: call 911. Crisis or thoughts of suicide: call or text 988. Not sure where to start? Call the Silver City Gospel Mission: 575-388-5071. Police, fire or sheriff, not an emergency: 575-388-8840 (Central Dispatch). Print our list of phone numbers →
These are the same steps our staff use when they help someone. "They" means the person who needs help: you, or someone you are helping. Go in order, and call ahead when you can.

1Check for danger first

Lost, wandering outside, hurt, or very sudden new confusion: call 911. Sudden confusion can be a stroke or an infection.

2Get a real diagnosis

Memory loss is not a normal part of aging. Some causes can be treated, like low vitamin B12, thyroid problems, medicine side effects, or depression.
You can say"Let's get a doctor to check this out, so you know what you are dealing with."
