Someone is shooting, or has a gun or weapon in a public place

Use when someone is shooting, waving a gun or knife, or threatening to hurt people in a store, school, church, office or other public place, or after a threat or suspicious package.

In danger right now: call 911. Crisis or thoughts of suicide: call or text 988. Not sure where to start? Call the Silver City Gospel Mission: 575-388-5071. Police, fire or sheriff, not an emergency: 575-388-8840 (Central Dispatch). Print our list of phone numbers →
These are the same steps our staff use when they help someone. "They" means the person who needs help: you, or someone you are helping. Go in order, and call ahead when you can.

1Run, hide, fight

RUN if you can safely get out. Leave your things. Help others come if you can, but don't wait for them.
HIDE if you can't get out. Lock or block the door, turn off lights, silence your phone, and stay out of sight and quiet.
FIGHT only as a last resort, if your life is in danger. Act together and use anything you can as a weapon.
Call 911 when it is safe. Tell them where you are, where the attacker is, how many, and what they look like.

2When police arrive

Keep your hands up and empty, with fingers spread. Put down anything in your hands.
Follow their orders. Don't run toward officers, grab them, or point.
The first officers will go to the attacker, not to the hurt. Help comes next.

3Help the hurt

Stop heavy bleeding by pressing hard on the wound. See the guide "Someone is bleeding badly".
If someone is not breathing, see the guide "Someone collapsed, isn't breathing, or won't wake up".

4A threat or suspicious package

Don't touch, move or open a suspicious bag or package. Move far away and call 911.
If someone makes a threat to hurt people, call 911 and write down exactly what was said.
