These are the same steps our staff use when they help someone. "They" means the person who needs help: you, or someone you are helping. Go in order, and call ahead when you can.
1Safety check first
You can ask"Are you having thoughts of hurting yourself or ending your life?"
If yes, stay with them and call or text 988. If they have a plan or a weapon, call 911.

Having a panic attack right now? Use the guide "Someone is having a panic attack".
2Listen and understand
You can say"Anxiety is real, and it's common. It's not your fault, and it can get better."
You can ask"What things are hardest right now: work, crowds, the bus, phone calls, appointments?"
You can ask"Are you using alcohol, drugs or a lot of caffeine to cope?"
3Simple steps that help
Slow breathing: in through the nose for 4, hold for 4, out through the mouth for 6. Do it for 2 minutes.
Grounding: name 5 things you see, 4 you can touch, 3 you hear.
Move a little each day. A short walk helps.
Keep a regular sleep time. Cut back on energy drinks, coffee and nicotine.
Take small steps. Go out for 5 minutes, then 10. Bring a friend the first time.
4Counseling and medicine
Counseling (like CBT) works well for anxiety. A doctor can talk about medicine too.
