These are the same steps our staff use when they help someone. "They" means the person who needs help: you, or someone you are helping. Go in order, and call ahead when you can.
1Listen first
You can say"Thank you for trusting me with this. A lot of people feel that way."
You can ask"Do you want to tell me what happened?"
2Let them know it is okay
You can say"Even people in the Bible felt this way. You can be honest with God."
You can say"How long wilt thou forget me, O LORD? for ever? how long wilt thou hide thy face from me?" (Psalm 13:1, KJV)
You can say"The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart." (Psalm 34:18, KJV)
3Check how they are really doing
You can ask"Are you having thoughts of ending your life?"
If yes, or you are not sure: use the guide "Someone is in crisis or talking about suicide". Call or text 988 together.

If they are grieving a death, see the guide "Grieving a death and needs support".
4Offer prayer and people to walk with them
You can ask"Would you like me to pray with you, or would you rather just talk?"
At the Gospel MissionPeer support counselors can keep meeting with them.
