Got an eviction notice, is behind on rent, or is looking for housing

Use when someone got an eviction notice or court papers, is behind on rent, or needs to find low-cost housing or get on a waitlist.

In danger right now: call 911. Crisis or thoughts of suicide: call or text 988. Not sure where to start? Call the Silver City Gospel Mission: 575-388-5071. Police, fire or sheriff, not an emergency: 575-388-8840 (Central Dispatch). Print our list of phone numbers →
These are the same steps our staff use when they help someone. "They" means the person who needs help: you, or someone you are helping. Go in order, and call ahead when you can.

1Check where they will sleep tonight

You can ask"Are you still in your home? Where will you sleep tonight?"
If they are already out, use the Tonight guides first.
At the Gospel MissionSierra House is for women and children. Ask Mission staff about space.
Being forced out by someone who hurts them? Domestic violence = El Refugio (24 hours) or 1-800-799-7233.

2Read the notice together

You can ask"Can I see the paper from your landlord or the court?"
Find what kind it is: a 3-day, 7-day or 30-day notice, or court papers with a hearing date.
Write down every date on it.
You can say"If there is a court date, it is very important to go."
