Got a notice to fix up their home or leave (code enforcement)

Use when someone got a code enforcement notice, citation, red tag or condemnation notice saying they must clean up, repair, or move out of a home, yard, trailer or lot.

In danger right now: call 911. Crisis or thoughts of suicide: call or text 988. Not sure where to start? Call the Silver City Gospel Mission: 575-388-5071. Police, fire or sheriff, not an emergency: 575-388-8840 (Central Dispatch). Print our list of phone numbers →
These are the same steps our staff use when they help someone. "They" means the person who needs help: you, or someone you are helping. Go in order, and call ahead when you can.

1Read the notice together

You can ask"Can I see the paper? Who sent it: the town, the county, or a court?"
Write down: what must be fixed, the deadline, any hearing or court date, and the phone number on the notice.
You can ask"Do you own the home, rent it, or stay there with someone's OK?"
You can say"Deadlines matter. Most offices will work with you if you call before the date."

2If they must leave now

If the home has been red-tagged or condemned as unsafe, they may not be allowed to sleep there. Find a safe place tonight first.
At the Gospel MissionSierra House is for women and children. Ask Mission staff about space.
See the guide "A man alone has nowhere to sleep tonight" or "A family with children has nowhere to sleep tonight".

3Call the office that sent it

Ask for more time and a written plan with dates for each repair.
