Someone is having a bad allergic reaction (bee sting, food, medicine)

Use when someone has swelling of the face, lips or throat, trouble breathing, hives all over, or feels faint after a sting, food or medicine.

In danger right now: call 911. Crisis or thoughts of suicide: call or text 988. Not sure where to start? Call the Silver City Gospel Mission: 575-388-5071. Police, fire or sheriff, not an emergency: 575-388-8840 (Central Dispatch). Print our list of phone numbers →
These are the same steps our staff use when they help someone. "They" means the person who needs help: you, or someone you are helping. Go in order, and call ahead when you can.

1Signs of a dangerous reaction

Trouble breathing, wheezing, tight throat, hoarse voice, swollen lips or tongue, fainting, or hives with throwing up are an emergency.

2Use their epinephrine (EpiPen)

You can ask"Do you have an EpiPen or other epinephrine?"
Help them use it right away. Press it firmly into the outer thigh (through clothes is OK) and hold it as the label says.
Note the time. If they're not better in 5-15 minutes and help hasn't come, use a second one if they have it.
Still call 911 even if they feel better. A reaction can come back.

3While you wait

If they have trouble breathing, let them sit up. If they feel faint, lay them down with legs raised.
If they throw up, roll them onto their side.
If they stop breathing, start CPR. See the guide "Someone collapsed, isn't breathing, or won't wake up".

4Mild reactions

A few hives or itching with no trouble breathing: allergy pills like Benadryl can help. Watch them closely for an hour.
For a bee sting, scrape the stinger out with a card and put a cold pack on it.
