Letters of support

When a group applies for a grant, the grant-maker often asks for letters of support: short letters from other organizations saying "we know this group and we back this project." We're glad to write them for local groups, and grateful when groups write them for us. It's all done online and free.

Ask the Mission for a letter of support

How it works
  1. Fill in this form (about 5 minutes). Only the starred questions are required.
  2. We write the letter right away from your answers and our work together.
  3. Our Manager, Vincent Laupola, Manager, reads it, may reach out to you to make sure it reflects a true partnership between our organizations, and signs it online, usually within 5 business days.
  4. You get a private link to download the signed letter as a PDF.

Have this ready: who is giving the grant, the due date, a sentence or two about your project and who it helps, and (if you know them) who the letter goes to and any length limit.

About you

We need an email or a phone number, so we can reach you if we have a question.

About the grant

The foundation, business or government office you're applying to.
Leave it blank if you don't know; we'll write "To whom it may concern."

What should the letter say?

You don't need to write the letter. Just give us the main points and we'll do the rest.

What would you like from the Mission?

If you check anything besides a letter, we'll call you to talk it through before you apply.

We use your information only to reply about this request. We never share it or add you to a mailing list.

In a paragraph
Silver City Gospel Mission serves people in Grant County who are hungry, homeless or in crisis, with daily meals, a food pantry, clothing, showers, laundry, a mail service for people without an address, help with vital documents, and shelter for women and children. We are a local nonprofit at 111 S. Texas St. in Silver City. Every service is free, and no one is required to attend worship or chapel to receive help. We work alongside local agencies, churches and businesses so that people get to the help they need, and our thrift store sales fund the soup kitchen and food pantry.

Questions

What makes a good letter of support?
  • It's on your letterhead, dated, addressed to the grant-maker, and signed by your director or manager.
  • It says how your organizations work together, with a real example or number (people referred, meals shared, years you've known each other).
  • It says what the project will mean for the people you serve.
  • It fits on one page.
What does a letter of support look like?

A short sample. Your letter is written from your own answers.

Dear Program Officer,

The Silver City Gospel Mission is glad to support Grant County Warm Homes in its application for the Winter Repair Fund. For three years our organizations have worked side by side: Warm Homes has sent us families who needed meals and clothing, and we have sent them neighbors whose heat had failed.

This grant would fix heating for 40 low-income households this winter. Many of them eat at the Mission, and we see every week what a cold house costs a family. We are glad to keep referring people to this program.

Sincerely,
Vincent Laupola, Manager
Silver City Gospel Mission

Does signing online really count?

Yes. For a letter of support, typing your name and checking the box to sign electronically counts like signing by hand. We record who signed and when, and the letter can't be changed after it's signed. If a grant-maker wants ink, print the letter and sign it.

How long does it take?

We aim to finish letters within 5 business days. If your deadline is sooner, send the request anyway and call 575-388-5071 so we know it's urgent.

Does it cost anything?

No. Letters, the Grant Partnership Board and everything on this page are free.

Who sees what I send?

Only Mission staff. We use your information only to work on your request, and your private link shows your letter only to people who have the link.
