Someone may be having a stroke or heart attack

Use when someone suddenly has a drooping face, a weak arm, trouble speaking, or chest pain or pressure, shortness of breath, or cold sweat.

In danger right now: call 911. Crisis or thoughts of suicide: call or text 988. Not sure where to start? Call the Silver City Gospel Mission: 575-388-5071. Police, fire or sheriff, not an emergency: 575-388-8840 (Central Dispatch). Print our list of phone numbers →
These are the same steps our staff use when they help someone. "They" means the person who needs help: you, or someone you are helping. Go in order, and call ahead when you can.

1Stroke: BE FAST

B - Balance: suddenly dizzy or can't walk straight.
E - Eyes: suddenly can't see well out of one or both eyes.
F - Face: ask them to smile. Does one side droop?
A - Arms: ask them to raise both arms. Does one drift down?
S - Speech: is it slurred or strange? Can they repeat a simple sentence?
T - Time: call 911 right away. Note the time the signs started. Every minute counts.

2Heart attack signs

Pain in the arm, back, neck, jaw or stomach, short of breath, cold sweat, upset stomach, or lightheaded.
Women, older people and people with diabetes may only feel tired, short of breath or sick to their stomach.

Have them sit and rest. Loosen tight clothes.
If they aren't allergic and the 911 dispatcher says to, have them chew one regular aspirin.

3If they collapse

If they stop responding and aren't breathing normally, start CPR and get an AED.
Use the guide "Someone collapsed, isn't breathing, or won't wake up".
