Someone is overdosing, or wants to stop using drugs today

Use when someone may be overdosing, or when someone says they want to stop using drugs (fentanyl, heroin, pills, meth or other drugs).

In danger right now: call 911. Crisis or thoughts of suicide: call or text 988. Not sure where to start? Call the Silver City Gospel Mission: 575-388-5071. Police, fire or sheriff, not an emergency: 575-388-8840 (Central Dispatch). Print our list of phone numbers →
These are the same steps our staff use when they help someone. "They" means the person who needs help: you, or someone you are helping. Go in order, and call ahead when you can.

1If someone is overdosing, act now

Signs: will not wake up, slow or no breathing, blue or gray lips, snoring or gurgling sounds.
Call 911. Give naloxone (Narcan). Stay with them until help comes.

2Thank them and ask a few questions

You can say"I'm really glad you want to stop. Let's find help today."
You can ask"What are you using? How often? When did you last use?"
You can ask"Have you been very sick before when you stopped?"
Stopping alcohol or nerve pills (like Xanax) all at once can be deadly. They need a doctor first.
