Use when someone has not worked in a long time (illness, jail, addiction, caregiving, homelessness or raising kids) and wants to go back to work but does not know where to start.
In danger right now: call 911. Crisis or thoughts of suicide: call or text 988. Not sure where to start? Call the Silver City Gospel Mission: 575-388-5071. Police, fire or sheriff, not an emergency: 575-388-8840 (Central Dispatch). Print our list of phone numbers →
These are the same steps our staff use when they help someone. "They" means the person who needs help: you, or someone you are helping. Go in order, and call ahead when you can.
1Start with where they are
You can say"Lots of people come back to work after a long time away. You can do this, one step at a time."
You can ask"How long has it been, and what kind of work did you do before?"
You can ask"What gets in the way: ID, a phone, a ride, health, a record, or confidence?"
You can ask"Do you get SSI, SSDI, SNAP or cash aid right now?"
2Make a plan at the job center (free)
The job center helps people start over. They can help pay for training and work costs.
