Needs a passport

Use when someone needs a U.S. passport book or passport card, for travel, for a job, or as a strong photo ID.

In danger right now: call 911. Crisis or thoughts of suicide: call or text 988. Not sure where to start? Call the Silver City Gospel Mission: 575-388-5071. Police, fire or sheriff, not an emergency: 575-388-8840 (Central Dispatch). Print our list of phone numbers →
These are the same steps our staff use when they help someone. "They" means the person who needs help: you, or someone you are helping. Go in order, and call ahead when you can.

1Find out why they need it

You can ask"Do you need to travel out of the country, or do you need it as a photo ID?"
You can ask"Have you ever had a U.S. passport before?"

2Gather the papers

Bring
  • Proof of U.S. citizenship, like a certified birth certificate (the original, not a copy)
Bring
  • Photo ID, like a driver's license or state ID, plus a photocopy of the front and back
Bring
  • Form DS-11, filled out but NOT signed (they sign in front of the clerk)
Bring
  • A passport photo (the post office can take it for a fee)

3Know the cost

For a first adult passport there are two payments.
The passport fee goes to the U.S. Department of State: $130 for a book, $30 for a card, or $160 for both.
A $35 fee goes to the post office.

4Apply at the Silver City Post Office

The post office is at 500 N. Hudson St. Passport hours are limited, and an appointment may be needed.
