Looking for meaning or a reason to keep going

Use when someone says life has no point, asks why they should keep going, or feels hopeless. Always check for suicide risk first.

In danger right now: call 911. Crisis or thoughts of suicide: call or text 988. Not sure where to start? Call the Silver City Gospel Mission: 575-388-5071. Police, fire or sheriff, not an emergency: 575-388-8840 (Central Dispatch). Print our list of phone numbers →
These are the same steps our staff use when they help someone. "They" means the person who needs help: you, or someone you are helping. Go in order, and call ahead when you can.

1Check for suicide risk first

You can ask"Sometimes when people feel this way, they think about ending their life. Are you thinking about killing yourself?"
If yes, or you are not sure: stay with them and use the guide "Someone is in crisis or talking about suicide".
Call or text 988 together. If they have a plan, a weapon or pills with them, or are in danger now: call 911.

2Listen and stay with them

You can say"I'm really glad you are here and talking to me."
You can ask"What has been the hardest part lately?"
You can ask"What has kept you going so far?"

3Share hope, if they want it

You can say"Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest." (Matthew 11:28, KJV)
You can say"For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the LORD, thoughts of peace, and not of evil." (Jeremiah 29:11, KJV)
You can ask"Would you like me to pray with you?"

4Connect them with people and purpose
