Someone is overheating: heat exhaustion or heat stroke

Use on hot days when someone is dizzy, sweating heavily, cramping, throwing up, confused, or passed out, or has hot red skin. Heat stroke can kill.

In danger right now: call 911. Crisis or thoughts of suicide: call or text 988. Not sure where to start? Call the Silver City Gospel Mission: 575-388-5071. Police, fire or sheriff, not an emergency: 575-388-8840 (Central Dispatch). Print our list of phone numbers →
These are the same steps our staff use when they help someone. "They" means the person who needs help: you, or someone you are helping. Go in order, and call ahead when you can.

1Heat stroke is an emergency

Call 911 if the person is confused, slurring words, passes out, has a seizure, or has very hot skin (red, dry or damp).

Cool them down right away while you wait. Move them to shade or indoors. Pour or spray cool water on them and fan them.
Put ice packs or cold wet cloths on the neck, armpits and groin.
Do not give drinks if they are confused or can't swallow safely.

2Heat exhaustion: cool down before it gets worse

Signs: heavy sweating, cool pale or clammy skin, dizziness, headache, muscle cramps, upset stomach, feeling weak.
Move them somewhere cool. Loosen tight clothes. Put cool wet cloths on the skin.
Have them sip water or a sports drink.
If they throw up, get worse, or don't feel better within an hour, get medical help.

3Staying safe in the heat

Drink water often, even if not thirsty. Rest in the shade in the afternoon.
Older people, babies, people on some medicines, and people who drink or use drugs overheat faster.
Never leave a child, older person or pet in a parked car, not even for a minute.
