These are the same steps our staff use when they help someone. "They" means the person who needs help: you, or someone you are helping. Go in order, and call ahead when you can.
1Gas smell: leave right away
If you smell rotten eggs or hear hissing, get everyone out of the building now.
Do not turn lights or anything electric on or off. Do not use a lighter or match. Do not start a car in the garage.
Leave the door open as you go. Call from outside, far from the building.

Do not go back inside until the gas company or fire department says it is safe.
2Carbon monoxide alarm or people feel sick
Carbon monoxide has no smell. If the alarm goes off, get everyone outside to fresh air right away and call 911.
Signs of poisoning: headache, dizziness, upset stomach, feeling weak, confusion, or sleepiness. Pets may get sick too.
If someone won't wake up, call 911. If they are not breathing, start CPR.

3Heating safely (especially in a tent, car or camper)
Never use a grill, camp stove, charcoal, propane heater or generator inside a home, tent, car, camper or garage. People die this way every winter.
Run a generator outside, at least 20 feet from doors and windows.
Never warm up in a car with the engine running in a closed space.
If they are cold with nowhere warm to go, use the guide "No heat, or it's dangerously cold or hot".
