Use when someone wants to forgive someone who hurt them, or wants to make things right with someone they hurt. Includes safety checks.
In danger right now: call 911. Crisis or thoughts of suicide: call or text 988. Not sure where to start? Call the Silver City Gospel Mission: 575-388-5071. Police, fire or sheriff, not an emergency: 575-388-8840 (Central Dispatch). Print our list of phone numbers →
These are the same steps our staff use when they help someone. "They" means the person who needs help: you, or someone you are helping. Go in order, and call ahead when you can.
1Listen to their story
You can say"That takes courage. Let's think it through together."
You can ask"Who do you want to forgive, or who do you want to ask for forgiveness?"
2Safety first
You can ask"Is this a person who hurt you or is still a danger to you?"
You can say"Forgiving someone does not mean you have to see them, trust them, or go back."
If they are thinking of going back to an abuser, see the guide "A woman (maybe with children) has no safe place or is leaving an abuser".
