A fire is burning in a home, building or camp right now

Use when a fire has started in a home, apartment, building, car, tent or camp and people need to get out and stay safe.

In danger right now: call 911. Crisis or thoughts of suicide: call or text 988. Not sure where to start? Call the Silver City Gospel Mission: 575-388-5071. Police, fire or sheriff, not an emergency: 575-388-8840 (Central Dispatch). Print our list of phone numbers →
These are the same steps our staff use when they help someone. "They" means the person who needs help: you, or someone you are helping. Go in order, and call ahead when you can.

1Get out and stay out

Get everyone out first. Leave everything behind.
Call 911 from outside. Do not stop to call from inside.
Never go back inside a burning building, not even for a pet or things. Tell the firefighters who is still inside.

You can ask"Is anyone still inside? Where?"

2Getting out through smoke

Get down low and crawl under the smoke.
Before opening a door, touch it with the back of your hand. If it is hot, use another way out.
If you can't get out, close the door, put a towel or clothes under it, and call 911. Wave something bright at a window.
If your clothes catch fire: stop, drop to the ground, cover your face, and roll.

3Small fire just starting

Grease fire on the stove: put a lid on the pan and turn off the heat. Never use water on a grease fire.
Only use a fire extinguisher if the fire is small and you have a clear way out. If in doubt, get out.
A campfire or warming fire that spreads to grass or brush is a wildfire. Get away and call 911.

4Burns and smoke

If someone is burned, use the guide "Someone is burned".
Smoke can hurt the lungs even if a person looks fine. Coughing, a hoarse voice, or trouble breathing needs a doctor right away.
