Someone is being attacked, or a fight breaks out

Use when you see someone being beaten, attacked or threatened, or a fight starts on the street, at a business, at an event or at the Mission.

In danger right now: call 911. Crisis or thoughts of suicide: call or text 988. Not sure where to start? Call the Silver City Gospel Mission: 575-388-5071. Police, fire or sheriff, not an emergency: 575-388-8840 (Central Dispatch). Print our list of phone numbers →
These are the same steps our staff use when they help someone. "They" means the person who needs help: you, or someone you are helping. Go in order, and call ahead when you can.

1Call 911 and keep yourself safe

Call 911. Say where, how many people, if anyone has a weapon, and if anyone is hurt.

Don't step between people who are fighting, especially if there's a weapon. Your safety comes first.
If someone has a gun or is shooting, use the guide "Someone is shooting, or has a gun or weapon in a public place".

2Ways to help without fighting

Make noise and get attention. Shout, "Stop! The police are coming!"
Get other people to help. Point at someone and say, "You, call 911."
If it's safe, help the person being attacked get away.
Distract: ask the person being harassed a simple question like, "Hey, is this the bus to Deming?" and walk them away.

3Afterward

Stay with the hurt person until help comes. For heavy bleeding, use the guide "Someone is bleeding badly".
Tell police what you saw.
If they were hurt by a crime, use the guide "Was robbed, beaten or hurt by a crime".
If it was a partner or family member, use the guide "A woman (maybe with children) has no safe place or is leaving an abuser".
