These are the same steps our staff use when they help someone. "They" means the person who needs help: you, or someone you are helping. Go in order, and call ahead when you can.
1Pull aside, stay alive
If you can't see, don't keep driving. Pull off the road as far to the right as you can, fully off the pavement if possible.
Turn OFF all lights, including headlights and flashers, and take your foot off the brake. Other drivers may follow your taillights and hit you.
Set the parking brake. Stay in the car with your seat belt on until the dust passes.
Never stop in a travel lane. If you can't pull off, slow down, turn on your lights and use the center line to guide you to the next exit.
If there is a crash, call 911 and give the mile marker. Stay in your car unless it is on fire.
