Needs a character letter for court

Use when someone asks for a character (support) letter for a judge, for sentencing, bond, probation, custody or another court case, and needs to know who should write it and what goes in it.

In danger right now: call 911. Crisis or thoughts of suicide: call or text 988. Not sure where to start? Call the Silver City Gospel Mission: 575-388-5071. Police, fire or sheriff, not an emergency: 575-388-8840 (Central Dispatch). Print our list of phone numbers →
These are the same steps our staff use when they help someone. "They" means the person who needs help: you, or someone you are helping. Go in order, and call ahead when you can.

1Find out what the letter is for

You can ask"What kind of case is it? Is it for sentencing, bond, probation, or custody?"
You can ask"Do you have a lawyer? Did your lawyer ask for letters?"
You can say"Your lawyer can tell you if letters will help and where to send them."

2Who should write it

Good writers know the person well: an employer, a teacher, a pastor, a counselor, a sponsor, or a family friend.
You can ask"Who has seen you working hard or making changes?"
You can say"Only write what you have seen yourself. Be honest."

3What goes in a good letter

Address it to "The Honorable Judge (last name)" with the case number at the top.
Say who you are and how you know the person, and for how long.
Tell real examples: work, recovery, caring for family, helping others.
Say the writer knows about the case, without arguing about the facts.
Do not ask for a certain sentence. Do not say anything untrue.
Keep it to one page. Sign it, date it, and add a phone number or email.
