A baby is coming and there's no time to get to the hospital

Use when someone is in strong labor, feels the urge to push, or the baby's head is showing, and there's no time to get to the hospital safely.

In danger right now: call 911. Crisis or thoughts of suicide: call or text 988. Not sure where to start? Call the Silver City Gospel Mission: 575-388-5071. Police, fire or sheriff, not an emergency: 575-388-8840 (Central Dispatch). Print our list of phone numbers →
These are the same steps our staff use when they help someone. "They" means the person who needs help: you, or someone you are helping. Go in order, and call ahead when you can.

1Call 911 now

Call 911 and put the phone on speaker. The dispatcher will coach you through each step.
911 (Grant County Regional Dispatch)
Emergency: police, fire, ambulance

If you are driving, pull over safely. Don't try to race to the hospital if the baby is coming.

2Get ready

Wash your hands, or use gloves if you have them.
Have her lie back propped on pillows, or on her side, on clean towels or sheets.
Keep clean towels or blankets ready to wrap the baby.

3As the baby comes

Let it happen naturally. Don't pull on the baby. Gently support the head as it comes out.
If the cord is wrapped around the neck, gently slip it over the head.
Once the baby is out, dry the baby with a towel and put the baby skin-to-skin on the mother's chest. Cover them both.
Rub the baby's back if the baby isn't crying or breathing. Wipe the nose and mouth.
If the baby doesn't start breathing, follow the dispatcher. See the baby section in the guide "Someone collapsed, isn't breathing, or won't wake up".
Don't cut the cord. Wait for help. If the afterbirth comes out, wrap it in a towel and keep it next to the baby.

4After

Mother and baby both need to go to the hospital to be checked, even if all seems fine.
