Someone is having an asthma attack or can't catch their breath
Use when someone is wheezing, coughing, struggling to breathe, or can't speak in full sentences because of asthma, COPD, smoke, dust or another breathing problem.
In danger right now: call 911. Crisis or thoughts of suicide: call or text 988. Not sure where to start? Call the Silver City Gospel Mission: 575-388-5071. Police, fire or sheriff, not an emergency: 575-388-8840 (Central Dispatch). Print our list of phone numbers →
These are the same steps our staff use when they help someone. "They" means the person who needs help: you, or someone you are helping. Go in order, and call ahead when you can.
1Call 911 if
They can't speak more than a few words, their lips or fingernails look blue or gray, they are using their neck and chest muscles hard to breathe, or they are getting sleepy or confused.
Their inhaler doesn't help, or they don't have one and are struggling.
You can ask"Do you have an inhaler?" Help them get it.
Sit them up, leaning a little forward. Loosen tight clothes. Stay calm and help them breathe slowly.
Most rescue inhalers (like albuterol): one puff at a time, with a spacer if they have one, as their doctor told them.
If they still have trouble after their usual dose and a few minutes, call 911.
Move them away from smoke, dust, strong smells or cold air.
3Could it be something else?
Sudden trouble breathing with swelling or hives after a sting, food or medicine: use the guide "Someone is having a bad allergic reaction (bee sting, food, medicine)".
