These are the same steps our staff use when they help someone. "They" means the person who needs help: you, or someone you are helping. Go in order, and call ahead when you can.
1Check safety now
You can ask"What happened? Did they hurt you or threaten you?"
In danger now, or someone is breaking in or hurting them: call 911.
You can ask"Is this person a partner, ex, or family member?" If yes, see the guide "A woman (maybe with children) has no safe place or is leaving an abuser".
610 N. Silver St. (cul-de-sac at 7th St. and Gold, behind the public works yard), Silver City · Usually opens December 1, every night from 5:00 pm. May be open more of the year: SPIN reported 3,900 bed nights in one quarter of 2025. Call to check.
At the Gospel MissionFor a woman, with or without children, tell Mission staff about space at Sierra House.
3If the landlord locked them out or shut off utilities
You can say"In New Mexico, a landlord needs a court order to make you leave. Changing the locks or shutting off utilities to force you out is not allowed."
