These are the same steps our staff use when they help someone. "They" means the person who needs help: you, or someone you are helping. Go in order, and call ahead when you can.
1Check the voucher dates
You can ask"Can I see your voucher? When does it end?"
You can ask"Which housing office gave it to you?"
You can say"A voucher must last at least 60 days. Many offices will give more time if you ask before it ends."
2Ask for more time
Call the housing office that gave the voucher. Ask for an extension in writing. List every place they tried.

If the person has a disability and needs more time because of it, they can ask for more time as a "reasonable accommodation." Say this in the letter.
Turning in a Request for Tenancy Approval (the landlord form) stops the clock while the housing office reviews it.
At the Gospel MissionThe case worker can help write the request and keep the search log.
3Find landlords who take vouchers
Ask the housing office for its list of landlords who take vouchers.
Look at apartments with income-based rent. Search the Housing New Mexico affordable rental list online at housingnm.org.
Check Bayard, Hurley, Santa Clara and Deming too, not just Silver City.
