These are the same steps our staff use when they help someone. "They" means the person who needs help: you, or someone you are helping. Go in order, and call ahead when you can.
1Find out where they are
You can ask"When was the amputation? Do you have a prosthetic now, or does yours need fixing?"
You can ask"Do you have Medicaid, Medicare, VA care or other insurance? Do you have a doctor?"
A wound that is red, hot, smells bad, or has pus, or a fever, needs a doctor today. Go to the ER if they feel very sick.

They can set up a visit or call with a trained person who also lost a limb. They also help find support groups.
You can say"A lot of people feel sad or angry after losing a limb. Talking to someone who has been there helps."
