These are the same steps our staff use when they help someone. "They" means the person who needs help: you, or someone you are helping. Go in order, and call ahead when you can.
1Choose a small first goal
Pick a problem a little money could help with: a ride, medicine copay or replacing a lost item. A $10 or $25 target can be a start. Meeting basic needs comes first.
2Choose an amount that will not cause a shortfall
Example: $2 set aside in five weeks totals $10. If a week has no spare money, skip it rather than trigger an overdraft or miss food.
3Choose a safe place
Compare a separate place in an existing account with a no-fee savings option. Ask about access and fees. Cash can be lost or stolen. Avoid automatic transfers when the checking balance is uncertain. If you receive means-tested benefits, ask program staff about applicable savings and reporting rules.
4Decide when to use it
Write what counts as an emergency for you. Using the cushion for that purpose means it worked. Review the goal afterward and rebuild when possible.
5Take the first step
Today: Write the goal and, if essentials are covered, set aside the first small amount.
Open the guide "Save for expenses that do not happen every month" for costs you can predict.
6Start with one specific problem
Write what the first cushion would pay for: a ride to work, replacing an ID or another small disruption. Use a target based on your own costs rather than assuming everyone can start with hundreds of dollars.
Example: if the goal is $25 and you already have $7, the remaining amount is $18. Six contributions of $3 reach it. Skip or reduce a contribution if making it would leave an essential bill unpaid.
7Protect access as well as the balance
Ask whether the savings place has a monthly fee, a minimum balance, a withdrawal fee or a delay before money can return to checking. A reserve for urgent transport needs to be reachable when transport is needed.
Do not put your emergency cushion into crypto, an investment that can lose value or someone else's account simply because they promise a high return. Ask your benefit program about any savings rules that apply before moving a large amount.
8After using it, reset the target
Write the reason, amount used and balance left. Check whether this was a one-time surprise or a predictable cost that belongs in an irregular-expense reserve. Rebuilding can wait until essentials are covered.
