These are the same steps our staff use when they help someone. "They" means the person who needs help: you, or someone you are helping. Go in order, and call ahead when you can.
1Mark the next two paydays
Write the actual take-home amount available now and the next confirmed payday. Include cash left from before; subtract pending payments once.
2List what must last until then
List bills due, food, medicine, work rides and other essentials for this exact period. Set aside an amount for bills due shortly after the next paycheck if that check alone will not cover them.
3Divide the money on paper
Example: $400 available minus $180 rent reserve, $80 food, $40 rides, $30 phone, $20 medicine and $20 irregular-expense reserve leaves $30. Label the reserves; they are already assigned even if they remain in the account.
4Check the plan before buying
Account balance is not the same as money free to spend. Recheck after an unexpected bill. If the plan is negative, open the guide "Not enough money to get through the month".
5Do one thing now
Today: Write what this paycheck must cover and the amount available after those costs. You can use envelopes on paper without carrying separate envelopes of cash.
6Use the amount that is actually spendable
Check whether a deposited check is available or still on hold. Compare the displayed balance with checks and bills you know have not appeared yet. Do not subtract the same pending debit twice.
If you have several apps and accounts, list where money is held and any fee or delay needed to move it. A balance you cannot access before a bill is due is not the same as cash available for that bill.
7Give every reserved dollar one job
Use simple labels: bills before next payday; food and work costs; a share of a later large bill; unassigned money. Keep those labels in a note even if all the money stays in one account.
Before buying something unplanned, ask which label will shrink. If the only available label is rent or medicine, pause and reconsider. Do not count a credit limit or overdraft limit as part of the paycheck.
8Handle a smaller check immediately
If pay arrives below your estimate, redo the plan that day. Check the pay stub for an error, then contact a bill provider if the smaller amount leaves a gap. Keep the confirmation of any change.
If a refund or extra shift adds money, first check upcoming essential costs. Open the guide "Save for expenses that do not happen every month" before committing the extra money to a new recurring purchase.
