1Know what the card does

A credit card borrows money; a debit card generally uses money in an account. A credit limit is not income. Decide how you would repay a purchase before using credit.

2Read the statement and terms

Find statement balance, minimum due, due date, APR and fees. Ask how the grace period works and whether you have one. A minimum payment is the required minimum, not a promise of quick repayment.

3Try a simple interest example

At 24% APR, $100 carried for about a month costs roughly $2 in interest before fees, assuming the balance stays near $100. Actual interest is usually calculated daily and depends on dates and terms. Paying only a little toward the balance can keep the debt around longer.

4Make a repayment plan

If affordable, paying the full statement balance by its due date generally avoids purchase interest when a grace period applies. If you cannot pay the minimum, contact the issuer before the due date and ask about hardship options. Avoid cash advances unless you understand their costs.

5Choose one action

Today: Find your due date and APR, or read a card offer without applying. You do not need a credit card to start budgeting.

6Know the three balances

The current balance can include purchases after the statement closed. The statement balance is the amount billed for that cycle. The minimum due is the smallest required payment for that statement. Find all three and the due date; they answer different questions.
Paying a minimum does not clear the debt and does not necessarily preserve a purchase grace period. Cash advances can have different fees and interest rules from purchases.

7Check how interest-free purchases actually work

Ask whether a purchase grace period applies to your account and whether carrying an old balance has removed it. If a grace period applies, paying the required full statement balance on time generally avoids purchase interest. Paying the minimum is different.
A promotional rate also has an end date and conditions. Before buying, ask what interest applies afterward and whether a deferred-interest promotion can charge earlier interest if the conditions are not met. Do not assume all "no interest" offers work alike.

8Keep a card from hiding the budget gap

Write every new charge as a future obligation. In a purchase log, a $25 grocery charge is the purchase; later paying that $25 is not a second grocery purchase. In your bill calendar, the payment still needs money on its due date.
If you cannot afford the minimum, call the issuer early, explain what you can afford and ask about hardship terms and any credit-reporting effects. Do not pay a third party just to make this call for you.
