These are the same steps our staff use when they help someone. "They" means the person who needs help: you, or someone you are helping. Go in order, and call ahead when you can.
Find deposits, withdrawals, monthly fees and ending balance. Match the transactions against your records. Report unfamiliar charges promptly using the bank's official contact information.
Available balance may not include every check or bill you have scheduled. Example: $100 available with a $35 payment not yet shown leaves $65 before new spending. Do not subtract a pending item twice.
Ask which monthly, ATM, overdraft and returned-payment fees apply. Ask what happens if you decline debit-card overdraft coverage and whether checks or automatic payments could still cause fees. Request a written fee schedule.
Choose low-balance and transaction alerts if available. Check that contact information is current. Alerts help you notice changes but do not guarantee that a payment will be stopped.
For a monthly maintenance fee, ask what waives it and whether your actual deposits qualify. A cash reload or transfer from another app may not count as a qualifying direct deposit. For ATM use, ask about both the account's fee and the ATM owner's fee.
Example: two $3 ATM-owner fees plus two $2.50 account fees total $11. Ask about an in-network option before the next withdrawal; do not assume a nearby machine belongs to your network.
You can say"I see a ____ fee on ____. What caused it? Was the rule disclosed? Can you review whether a refund is appropriate, and what would avoid it next time?" Write the answer. A refund is a request, not a guarantee.
If the transaction itself is unfamiliar, report it promptly as a possible unauthorized transaction rather than only asking about a fee. Use the number on your card or statement.
Prepare the dates, amounts, what you asked the bank to do and the response. Keep copies and use official secure channels for sensitive documents. Do not post account numbers or statements on social media.
CFPB complaint starting point: https://www.consumerfinance.gov/complaint/. You can ask about a lower-cost account without closing your existing one first; check pending payments and direct deposits before switching.
