These are the same steps our staff use when they help someone. "They" means the person who needs help: you, or someone you are helping. Go in order, and call ahead when you can.
1 First, check for dangerYou can ask "When did you last drink or use? What did you use?"
Overdose signs (won't wake up, slow or no breathing, blue lips)? Call 911 and give naloxone (Narcan).
Shaking hard, seeing or hearing things, confused, a seizure, or chest pain? Call 911 or go to the emergency room now.

You can say "Stopping alcohol or nerve pills like Xanax all at once can be deadly. Please don't do it alone."
2 Thank them and learn what they needYou can say "I'm really glad you asked. Let's make some calls together right now."
You can ask "Do you have Medicaid? Do you have a photo ID? Are you a veteran?"
You can ask "Can you leave town for a week or more? Do you have kids or pets to plan for?"
Medical detox = a hospital or clinic watches you and gives medicine. It is safest for alcohol and nerve pills.
Social or residential detox = a safe, sober bed with staff. Some places go straight from detox into a 30-day or longer program.
Outpatient detox = you sleep at home and see a clinic every day. For opioids, this is often medicine like Suboxone.
3 Call the help lines firstThese lines are free, open 24/7, and can look for an open bed with you.
