1Welcome the question

You can say"Thank you for asking. Having Narcan can save a life, maybe yours or a friend's."
You can say"You don't have to stop using to get these. No one here will judge you."
You can ask"Do you want Narcan, test strips, clean supplies, or all of these?"
Someone overdosing right now? Call 911 and give naloxone. New Mexico's Good Samaritan law protects the caller and the person overdosing from drug possession charges. It does not cancel a warrant or probation rules.

4Test strips and clean supplies

Fentanyl test strips and other drug-checking supplies are legal in New Mexico.
Ask the public health office, Street Outreach or the Recovery Coalition for fentanyl and xylazine test strips.
Syringe services give new needles and supplies, a safe place to drop used needles, and testing for HIV and hepatitis C.
How to use a fentanyl strip: mix a little of the drug with water, dip the strip, wait. One line means fentanyl was found. Two lines means none was found.
You can say"A clean test does not mean it's safe. Fentanyl can hide in one part of a batch."
See the guide "Has hepatitis C or wants to be tested".
See the guide "Has a sore, wound or foot problem that won't heal".

5How to give Narcan (nasal spray)

Shout their name and rub hard on their breastbone. No answer? Call 911.
Lay them on their back. Put the tip of the spray in one nostril and press the plunger all the way.
If they don't wake up in 2-3 minutes, give a second dose in the other nostril.
If they are not breathing, give rescue breaths if you know how. The 911 operator will help.
When they breathe, roll them on their side. Stay with them.
Narcan wears off in 30 to 90 minutes. The overdose can come back. They still need medical care.
Narcan will not hurt someone who did not take opioids. When in doubt, give it.

6Safer use tips to share

Never use alone. Have someone with Narcan nearby.
Go slow, and use less after any break, jail or treatment. Your body can't handle as much.
Don't mix drugs with alcohol or nerve pills.
At the Gospel MissionOur peer support counselors and case worker are here to talk during Mission hours, with no pressure.
If they want to stop, see the guide "Needs detox or a treatment bed today".
