📞 We need volunteers to keep this guide up to date
Phone numbers, hours and services change all the time. Volunteers call each place to make sure its listing is still right, so no one makes a trip for nothing. You can do it from home, on your own schedule. An hour a week makes a real difference.
⚠️ New work rules for SNAP and Medicaid: check if you are exempt
Many adults ages 18 to 64 on SNAP must now show 80 hours a month of work, volunteering or training, or SNAP stops after 3 months. Starting January 1, 2027, some adults 19 to 64 on Medicaid must do the same, and will renew every 6 months. Many people are exempt, and our case worker can help you check, log your hours, and answer letters.
Our analysis: what the new rules mean for people we serve
SNAP: since January 1, 2026, adults 18 to 64 without a child under 14 must do 80 hours a month (about 20 a week). Grant County is not waived.
Medicaid (Turquoise Care): starting January 1, 2027, many adults 19 to 64 in the Other Adults group must show 80 hours a month, and renew every 6 months.
What counts: paid or unpaid work, volunteering for a nonprofit, job training, or school at least half-time. You can mix them. The same 80 hours count for SNAP and Medicaid.
Parents and caregivers of a child 13 or younger are exempt from both rules. So are pregnant women and Native Americans.
Also often exempt: a health problem, disability or addiction that makes work hard, people in drug or alcohol treatment, and (for Medicaid) people released from jail in the last 3 months.
Veterans and homeless people are no longer exempt just for that reason, but many still qualify another way. Homeless more than 6 months? Ask about SNAP's "unfit for work" exemption.
Got a letter in a turquoise envelope? It does not mean you will lose coverage. Open it, answer by the date, and keep proof of your hours.
What to do now: keep your address up to date at yes.nm.gov (you can use the Mission's free mail service) and bring any letter to the Mission so we can help.
