A student is homeless: right to stay in school, rides and meals
Use when a child or teen has no steady home (shelter, motel, car, camping, or staying with others after losing housing) and the family needs help keeping them in school.
These are the same steps our staff use when they help someone. "They" means the person who needs help: you, or someone you are helping. Go in order, and call ahead when you can.
1Find out if the child counts as homeless for school
You can ask"Where are you and the kids sleeping right now?"
A federal law (McKinney-Vento) protects students who have no fixed, regular and adequate place to sleep at night.
That includes a shelter like Sierra House, a motel, a car, a tent or camper, or living with other people because they lost their home or ran out of money.
Teens on their own (not with a parent) are covered too.
You can say"Your children have rights at school. Being homeless is not their fault, and the school has a person whose job is to help."
Stay in the same school (the "school of origin") even after moving across town or out of the district, if that is best for the child.
A ride to and from that school. The school arranges it. Ask the liaison.
Or enroll right away in the school where they are staying now, even without papers like a birth certificate, shot records, or proof of address.
Free school breakfast and lunch. Nearly all New Mexico public schools give every student free breakfast and lunch. Homeless students qualify for free meals in any case.
Help with school supplies, fees, sports and clubs. Ask the liaison what they can cover.
Young children can get priority for Head Start and preschool.
